Artist Statement
A childlike wonder towards the magic of art in the early 2000s led to the creation of a whimsical and dreamy world, Sunshine Kingdom. Sunshine Kingdom is a small area of lands that include Sunshine Town, a town of anthropomorphic animals, and Moonlight City, a city of humans and human-like characters. Led by a bizarre government, one of Sunshine Town's main qualities is the idea that children can wander around town free of worries. These two areas often contrast each other with Sunshine Town being a utopian settlement and its counterpart, Moonlight City, being a city of fantasy drama.

This narrative is generally represented through illustrations, digitally and traditionally. The visual storytelling aspect of the artworks aim to deeply engage the audience through fantasy plots and gag humor.

Ultimately, the end goal is to influence people to perceive the world in a more humorous way and offer a heartwarming place of solace in the artworks.

Influences
Born in Dallas, Texas as an Asian-American, Le's main artistic influences mainly derived from East Asian artworks, specifically Japanese mangas. In a town where Asian representation was naught, mangas were the easiest representation to find a couple decades ago. Notable childhood artists include Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of Inuyasha, Julietta Suzuki, the writer of Kamisama Kiss, and Aida Iro, who wrote Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun. The bold, yet soft, character designs and fantasy elements helped shape Le's introspective towards entertainment media.

Cà Phê Sữa Đá, 2025

An art piece presented to Copic Award 2025.

The Story

A fairy born out of a coffea arabica plant in the middle of the Vietnamese countryside has trouble controlling her coffee superpowers. Highly eccentric due to her high caffeine count, her guard has quite a difficult time.

Behind the Scenes

I initially found the opportunity to participate in the Copic Awards from a YouTube channel named "Natsume-Sanchi" since they were one of the judges. I thought, "Hmm, interesting. Should I join? I already have these Copic markers laying out right in front of me." And then, I did.

The idea for Cà Phê Sữa Đá actually came to me quite easily. At the time, I was also working on my college capstone project, Moon Orchid, which takes place in an ancient Vietnamese setting during the Nguyen Dynasty. I was already deep into research on the clothes and how people's daily outfits differentiated based on social class. I became quite infatuated with áo nhật bình and the intricacy of the outfits of back then. Compared to the traditional áo dài, áo nhật bình has a rectangular shaped collar, a looser fit, and stripes to represent each of the elements at the edge of the sleeves. I knew I wanted to incorporate this outfit somehow, so I began looking for different themes that'd match.

Recently, romance-fantasy genres are quite popular in the webcomic world. Every night, I'd love a good slice of romantasy pie! I'm not sure how exactly the idea came to me, but I suddenly made the protagonist of the illustration an aristocratic fairy born out of a coffee arabica plant. She reminded me of Vietnamese iced coffee, a popular Vietnamese drink in the mainland and overseas! One thing about Vietnamese coffee is that the caffeine amount is quite high. Due to that fact, I thought it'd add a comedic twist if the main protagonist, the coffee fairy, was eccentric due to the high amounts of caffeine coursing through her DNA. She always has high amounts of energy, so she's a magnet to trouble. And, the one who has to clean up her messes is her guard. Poor guy, he probably needs a shot of coffee after her antics.

Taro Bubble Tea Springs, 2022

Personal project.

The Story

Somewhere deep in the Sunshine Kingdom exists a strange hot spring? The ground erupts a purple liquid with big, chewy brown balls while the skies get covered by a bright yellow-orange sphere. The inhabitants aren't sure what to make of this mystery, but they know one thing! CANON BALL!!!

Behind the Scenes

This artwork started on a hungry stomach, like many other great ideas. I was trying to brainstorm what kind of places the blobfishes should visit on their field trips or even just a casual trip with friends. Then I realized, anything I say goes inside a world that I create! I thought, "How nice would it be if I was a tiny creature swimming in my taro milk tea?" I could feel a lightbulb light up inside my head before I immediately went to work on Taro Bubble Tea Springs.

The Culinary Fairy, 2024

Clip Studio Paint's 42nd International Illustration Contest with the theme of "Cooking and Cuisine" submission.

The Story

"You called us to make pastries?!"
Yume, an aspiring pastry chef, has summoned sausage fairies to help her with her latest pastry assignment. Only, these fairies have no background in the world of bakeries! Rather, they're used to the harsh world of coal and grills. Where is the barbeque? Did Yume make a mistake, or is she about to create a unique sensation?

Behind the Scenes

Aren't pigs in a blanket weird? Like, seriously. Who would've thought a sausage wrapped in sweet dough would make for a tasty morning treat?
I created The Culinary Fairy based on my confusion of the world while also drawing inspirations from 2000s shoujo animes, such as Shugo Chara and Yumeiro Patissiere. However, unlike the little spirits or charas of the animes, these fairies aren't helpful at all. The sausage fairies having no knowledge of baking was a fun twist I added to make the story more interesting as the characters struggle and learn about the hardships of cooking.

A Place of Comfort, 2025

Personal project.

The Story

The top go-to place in Sunshine Town belongs to Ooy Ca Phe! From little kids to the elderly to the Bloberfly God, everyone goes here! With a new concept every day, the Ooy Ca Phe operates with spontaneous efforts. Ask for anything and if they have the ingredients, your dinner is served! Or, you'll get declined 50 times in a row.

Behind the Scenes

I initially planned for the Ooy Ca Phe to just be one of the many stops along the town, but as the worldbuilding of Sunshine Town progressed, it became very popular among the residents. Sometimes it feels like my characters are the ones writing the story instead of me.

Moon Orchid's Logo, 2025

Personal project.

Design Problem

How can I create an engaging and fun logo for my comic, Moon Orchid?

Audience

Teens to Young Adults

Moon Orchid's Plot

Su Orchid has lived her whole life up top of the Orchid Mountains, never stepping foot past the tall green gates. She always yearns for adventure beneath the mountains, but has decided to keep her expectations low. However, the enchantment of an ancient curse ties three individuals together, Su Orchid, Oanh, and Xiao. With Oanh and Xiao tied at Su's feet as shadows, how will the ties of her fate change?

Notable Trends

- a rise in Y2K aesthetics
- overlapping letters
- pixel art
- including parts of the story in the logo

Ideate

- Su Orchid's red eyes and long eyelashes are a key point of the story. When Su's eyes burn red, it signals the curse taking over her body.
- The setting takes place on the Orchid Mountains. What ways can I incorporate this into the final design?
- The story may have serious themes, but it's still a comedy. How can I let the logo appear a little less serious?

Final Design

- Color scheme: green, yellow, blue, red accents for Su's eyes
- Font name: Magical Neverland Regular
- The color scheme reflects the natural mountainside setting of the story by including the natural colors of the earth. The bright red accents depict Su's eyes when she's fallen under the curse.
- Su's eyes were drawn directly into the logo to have a playful effect on the design while also hinting to the plot and its underlying serious themes.
- The font type also symbolizes the fantasy and natural elements by embodying swirls and serifs.
- The pixelated effect of the logo expresses the less serious themes of the story while also displaying the rising trend in Y2K aesthetics.
